MY REVIEW:

 

I want to start off by saying how much I LOVE Renee Carlino’s novels! I was SO excited once I learned that a brand spanking new novel was coming out. I jumped at the opportunity to review After the Rain. I will do my best to review this novel and give it the attention that it deserves without spoiling the story. I will say that there are several twists in After the Rain.

In After the Rain you will meet Avelina Belo. I refer Avelina as a barrel racing cowgirl. At the time Avelina lived in California with her family. After a trip to the rodeo Avelina meets herself a cowboy that she becomes absolutely smitten for. This insta-love that Avelina has succumbed to has lead to her moving to Montana with her cowboy. Life couldn’t be any better. Avelina has fallen into a comfortable routine and she has adapted very well to her new surroundings. Avelina and her cowboy decide to go on a little trip, but little did Avelina know that this trip would change her life forever. There was something eerie in the air, Avelina could feel it and she was not the only one. Avelina and her cowboy decide to ignore this intuition and continue on with their plans. That is when a freak accident occurs and it changes Avelina’s life forever. It is difficult for Avelina to pick up the shattered pieces and move on when she allowed her cowboy to hold the reigns this whole time. Avelina was lost and had no clue on how to live her life the way that she wanted to when all she was ever use to was living her live the way she was expected to. Avelina needed a purpose to continue on and work to put the pieces of her life back together, but the only thing that Avelina was currently doing is surviving, she was not living. Well, that is until she met Nate Myers.

Nate Myers is a smart, career driven man. His only focus is becoming the best cardiothoracic surgeon that California has to offer. Nate is not interested in getting serious with a woman because college and work are more important. Nate got a rude awakening when he let his ego go to his head, which landed him a malpractice suit. Nate at this time was lost. He was not prepared to cope with the feelings that occur from losing a patient. At this time Nate needs an outlet. His father suggests that he takes a breather by going to the cattle ranch in Montana where some of his family lives. Upon arrival, Nate meets Avelina. His aunt has warned Nate about Avelina’s past and her reclusiveness. I think that Nate views Avelina as an opportunity to help someone in order to make up for the patient that he could not help. Not only does Nate need to do this for himself, but he also needs to do this for Avelina’s well-being. Avelina’s lifestyle at the time is not healthy. Not physically per se, but mentally. From here on out Avelina is Nate’s mission. He is determined to crack her shell and get to know her. Little did Nate know that Avelina would influence Nate to re-evaluate his lifestyle and priorities.  

Ultimately, Nate and Avelina need each other, but they don’t know it yet. They bring out the good in each other. This leads to each of them questioning their lives and most importantly, their future. They give each other hope and they begin to wonder if there is really something more that their life is supposed to become.

All in all, After the Rain is a fantastic story that will take you on a journey of two characters on the road to self-discovery and overcoming the challenges that were thrown their way. This is a story that you will cherish and is good for any reader!

Yay!! Amber’s story! I am in love with all of the characters from Author K.A. Robinson’s Torn series, so imagine my excitement when I learned that TAMED was in the works! Even though TAMED is a part of the Torn series it Amber’s story can be read as a standalone. If you have read all of the Torn novels then you know that Amber is Chloe and Logan’s best friend. They are a trio. Adam on the other hand is a member of Drake’s band and Drake is Chloe’s husband.

I really liked Amber’s character, but I could not help but feel bad for her. Amber makes a lot of mistakes and unfortunately she is currently enduring the consequences of her mistakes. Amber was never interested in a committed relationship. Amber enjoyed being a college student with no commitments and having the ability to live the life of a careless college student. Amber was convinced that nothing would change the path that she was leading…she was content. However after tagging along with Chloe to see Drake’s band perform, she met Adam. Amber was immediately swept away by his gorgeous good looks and cocky attitude.

What can I say? Adam was a ladies’ man or so it seemed. Adam also was not interested in a committed relationship, but he was certainly interested in getting to know Amber better, but he was timid at first. Adam did not want to become involved with Drake’s girlfriend’s best friend especially when all he planned to do was love women and leave them! Yup! Adam is a womanizer. However Amber’s temptations and forwardness was no match for Adam. She was a woman with a plan and her plan was to get a taste of Adam. At first Amber and Adam agreed to keep things open and to just have fun, but once the deed was done things changed. Amber was different. Adam also caused Amber to experience a connection that she has never felt before.

Amber and Adam have fun for a while, but it was time for Adam to go on tour, so he departed after an agreement to remain friends was made. Every time Adam and Amber would get together they could not help their attraction from growing, so Adam did what he knew best…he pushed Amber away. Even after their official separation their paths kept intertwining. This is when mistakes are made….At this time I HATED Adam. I thought that there was no way that he could redeem himself for what he did to Amber and how he treated her. The real question is can Adam and Amber put the past in the past and focus on the real issue a hand? How can a mistake that was made during one careless night be fixed? You will have to read TAMED to find out!

I remember as I was reading Sempre and Sempre Redemption I kept thinking to myself that I wanted to know Corrado Moretti’s story. In Sempre and Sempre Redemption, Corrado was an intense, frightening, mysterious character. Corrado’s mysterious persona intrigued me and by the end of Sempre Redemption I was crossing my fingers and praying to sweet baby Jesus in a wicker basket to one day have the chance to read his story! Imagine my excitement when I learned that we would in fact get a glimpse into Corrado Moretti’s life. *Cue heavenly music*

Made was written in a very unique way. I was honestly under the impression that the story would begin around the same time frame as Sempre. I will admit that I was a little disappointed when I first learned the story’s time frame. Don’t kill me! Let me explain! I felt that in the Sempre series Corrado played a very important role that we knew little about. It seemed that everything that occurred in the Sempre series Corrado was involved in somehow, but we did not get to learn his side of the story and I wanted to know! I mean we were able to get a good idea of Corrado’s character and involvement, but without reason or justification. At this point is where J.M. Darhower shows her brilliance and after reading Made I know why she wrote Corrado’s story this way. Now I cannot imagine her writing Corrado’s story any other way.

Made’s Prologue begins right after Corrado has learned his verdict in the RICO case. Reporters lined the path of Corrado’s escape in hopes of getting one shot of The Kevlar Killer. Of course every reporter had a question for Corrado, but he never broke his silence. However one reporter asked, “What made you this way?” This question made Corrado pause and finally break his silence by stating, “Sweetheart, I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”

Corrado’s statement is very true in this case which is why in order to really learn how Corrado became the person he is today. This is why Corrado Moretti aka The Kevlar Killer’s story began when he was seven years old. I believe that would never truly know why someone is the way they are unless you start from the beginning and in this case it is necessary.

This approach allows the reader to see how Corrado’s upbringing has influenced his character as a “made” man. Additionally, Made covers from the time that Corrado is 7 years old to the age of 51. We get the whole story! During this time we learn a bit about Corrado’s childhood and how his family was affiliated with the Mafia. Corrado’s father Vito was a made man whose boss was none other than Antonio DeMarco. Corrado Moretti’s childhood was not an easy one. His mother was an abusive alcoholic. Vito, Corrado’s father, was hardly ever present because he was living the “made” life back in Chicago.

As we have learned in the Sempre novel’s Vincent and Celia DeMarco are Antonio’s children. What was really intriguing is that we learn how Corrado first meets Celia and Vincent. We never really knew the significance of Corrado and Celia’s relationship and what Corrado had to do to get Antonio’s blessing. One thing is for sure, Celia brings out the best in Corrado. His devotion to Celia is touching and just shows how much Corrado’s word means to him. Corrado made Antonio a promise that he was dead set on keeping.

In the Sempre novel’s all we saw was one side of Corrado and knew that he was an emotionless, ruthless man. This trait is what made Corrado stand out among his peers. Corrado felt no emotion when he carried out a hit. He viewed murdering someone as an order, nothing more nothing less, it was strictly business. He was the type of person who would murder his own blood without batting an eye. It was either kill or be killed in his world and Corrado would stop at nothing to go home to his Celia every night. Corrado was certainly not the traditional husband, but his love and devotion for Celia was unwavering. He was able to put business aside and be the person that Celia deserved. This was interesting to see considering that we only ever seen Corrado dark side.

“I can’t live up to it. You put me on a pedestal. I’ll only fall.”

“You’ll never fall. Not if I’m there to catch you.”

Another thing that excited me about Made is that I was able to learn more about Vincent and Maura’s relationship. You will learn how Vincent met Maura and where she came from! You will also discover how Sal became the leader of La Costa Nostra and how the lifestyle changed after that. All in all, Made fills in the blanks from the questions you probably had after reading the Sempre series. You will learn more about everything and how it all ties together including Corrado’s connection to Haven and Sal’s connection to Haven. You will also see another side to Vincent which sheds light on why he is the way he is. Remember Made covers a time frame of a little over 40 years which means that all the important parts will be covered. Believe me when I say that Made is an addition to the series that you do not want to miss out on reading!

I must admit that I was excited and anxious to read Insidious after the Consequences series. The Consequences series is one of my all-time favorite reads. I thought to myself, how can anyone compare to Anthony Rawlings? Well folks, you are in for a surprise. Aleatha Romig has created characters that certainly rival with Tony! I will tell you this, if you enjoyed the Consequences series, then Insidious is right up your alley.

Insidious has some similarities in comparison to Consequences. All I will say is there is a deal that occurs. However with Insidious there is no captor/captive scenario, it is more of a mutual agreement that is based on a would you rather situation. In this case the lesser of two evils must be chosen. That’s all I’m giving away. You want a dark twisted thriller? You got it! Insidious captivates you from the first page and leaves you anxious to unwind this web of lies and deceit.

Victoria is a strong willed main character that suits this story perfectly. The story would not have unfolded as dramatically with a weak heroine. One thing is for sure, there are many sides to Victoria. Everything she does is for a reason.

Stewart Harrington is one of the richest, most powerful men in Miami. He is controlling, calculating, and has unusual needs. Stewart will stop at nothing to get what he wants. No is not an option in his eyes. You can have anything for the right price even Victoria.
